WOWOW INC. (hereinafter referred to as "the company" or "we") will protect personal information that it collects and uses based on the following policy.

The company aims to contribute to the happiness of people and the creation of rich culture by providing excellent contents and services through entertainment.
We recognize that it is an important responsibility to properly handle personal information, which is an information asset of the company, and to protect the rights and interests of individuals.
Therefore, we declare that we will establish, implement and maintain our privacy policy as follows: *Note: original version is in Japanese

  1. With regard to the handling of personal information handled in all businesses and the personal information of employees and others, the company will comply with the Personal Information Protection Act, the My Numbers Act, other laws and regulations concerning the handling of personal information, guidelines specified by the governments and other authorities. In addition, we will formulate a personal information protection management system compliant with the Japanese Industrial Standards' Personal Information Protection Management Systems Requirements (JIS Q 15001) to protect personal information.
  2. When acquiring and using personal information, we will specify the purpose of its use and will not handle personal information beyond the scope required for achieving the specified purpose of use (the "non-purpose of use"). In addition, we will take appropriate management measures to prevent the non-purpose of use.
  3. We will not provide personal information obtained to third parties except when we have the consent of the individual or required by laws and regulations.
  4. If we receive complaints or comments concerning the handling of personal information, we will promptly investigate facts and respond in good faith within a reasonable period.
  5. In order to properly manage the acquired personal information, we will implement systematic, personal, physical and technical safety measures and will work to prevent or correct leakage, loss or damage of personal information.
  6. We will continuously review our personal information protection management system along with the changes in social conditions and environments and improve our efforts to protect personal information.

Basic Policy on Information Security

The company aims to contribute to the happiness of people and the creation of rich culture by providing excellent contents and services through entertainment. For this purpose, we recognize that it is important to protect information assets including customer information and management information and position information security as one of our important strategies in management. We hereby declare that we will establish and practice this Basic Policy on Information Security.

  1. Information security system
    We will establish an information security management system within the company and work to properly manage information assets by developing and implementing internal regulations.

    In order to ensure the security of information, we will clarify handling according to importance and risk and properly manage it.

Personal Information Handling Regulations

Based on the company's Privacy Policy and Basic Policy on Information Security, we will handle the personal information obtained and its use by the company as follows.
In addition, we will review and revise these Personal Information Handling Regulations and update this page as necessary so that customers can use our services with security.

    1. Online subscriber service usage and purchase history (including usage history of video on-demand transmission service (including viewing history), product names, names of services used, prices, purchase and usage dates, times, places, etc.)

    6. Usage environments
    7. IP addresses
    8. Information on devices using online subscription service (including model name, location information, contract information, cookies, etc.)

    10. Information that can identify online subscribers by image or sound
    11. Contents of opinions, requests, inquiries, etc.
    12. Information of online subscribers themselves such as residential areas, gender, occupation, age, interests, etc. provided by online subscribers when starting to use services
    13. Other information acquired properly by the company in compliance with laws and regulations

    We will use the personal information of subscribers for the following purposes.

    a) Usage when identifying the individual

    3. Distribution of information related to online subscription services such as e-mail magazines, etc. by various means of notification including e-mail

    *Individual Number work refers to when the company, based on the Act on the Use of Numbers to Identify a Specific Individual in the Administrative Procedure (the "My Numbers Act"), receives Individual Numbers from customers, external experts, employees, confirmed employment applicants, shareholders, etc., enters them on payment records, withholding slips for salary income, salary payment reports, notifications of acquisition of health insurance/welfare pension insurance qualifications, etc. and submits them to the Tax Office District Director, mayor of the city, ward, town or village, Japan Pension Service, etc.

    5. Viewer surveys aimed at improving satellite digital pay TV broadcasting service
    6. Processing various statistics concerning viewership, etc. of satellite digital pay TV broadcasting service
    7. Offering benefits, information, etc. to subscribers
    8. Provision to third parties related to providing satellite digital pay TV broadcasting service

  4. We will use online subscribers' personal information related to service usage history to the following extent in cooperation with WOWOW Communications, Inc., which operates wowshop.

    -Online subscriber ID, name, address, telephone number, date of birth, e-mail address and other online subscriber information

3. Provision

We will not provide personal information to any third party except in the following cases;

  1. When providing the following services to customers;
    Notwithstanding the foregoing, we will provide the minimum amount of personal information required to achieve the purposes of use.

  5. When the consent of the individual is obtained separately
  6. When it is necessary for the protection of the life, body or property of a person and it is difficult to obtain the consent of the individual
  7. When provision is permitted under the stipulations of laws and regulations or when necessary for the public interest

*We will never provide personal information to any another corporation without customer consent even when serving as an agent for information from that corporation.

4. Outsourcing

We may outsource operations to third parties. In such cases, we will select contractors based on our selection criteria, take necessary protection measures such as concluding contracts on confidentiality, personal information protection, safety management, etc., and undertake necessary and appropriate management and supervision of such contractors.

5. Optionality

When we ask for optional information in applications for services, we will indicate the items that are optional. Items indicated as such will not affect services to be provided even if left blank.

6. Changing Registered Information, Cancelling and Unsubscribing

The following customers can change their registered information, cancel services or unsubscribe using the methods below.

*1 Customers using SKY PerfecTV!, certain cable TV stations (YCV, etc.), J:COM or Hikari-TV should inquire with their provider.
*2 Some online subscribers may not be able to add or change registered information or unsubscribe through the methods above. If this is the case, please use the methods detailed on the website through which you registered.

7. Requesting Notification, Disclosure, Correction, Addition or Deletion of Purposes of Use

  1. You can request to be notified of the purposes of use regarding the personal information possessed by the company by a prescribed procedure. However, we may not notify you if you are able to know the purposes of use or if notifying you falls under either of the following. If we will notify you, we will inform you of the reasons in writing.
    1. When there is a risk of harming the life, body, property or other rights or interests of the individual or a third party
    2. When it is necessary to cooperate in executing the duties prescribed by a national agency or local public entity and there is a risk of interfering with the execution of these duties
  2. You can request that objective facts of the personal information possessed by the company be disclosed by a prescribed procedure.
    However, we may not disclose these if disclosure falls under any of the following. If we do not disclose these, we will inform you of the reasons in writing.
    1. When there is a risk of harming the life, body, property or other rights or interests of the individual or a third party
    2. When it would be a violation of other laws and regulations
  3. If it becomes clear based on a disclosure request of (2) above that there is an error in your personal information, you can request correction of the erroneous information, addition or deletion by a prescribed procedure.

8. Requesting End of Use, Deletion or End of Provision to Third Parties

Unless otherwise stipulated in laws and regulations, if there is a request to end use, delete or end provision to third parties, we will take measures accordingly.
Notwithstanding the foregoing, this may not be possible if taking measures, including the request in 7. (3) above, requires a large expense or is otherwise difficult and alternative measures necessary to protect the rights and interests of the individual are taken. We will inform you in writing of the measures taken (or if we will not take measures).

*The company stipulates that the above Section 7. and 8. will be handled in response to personal information disclosure requests from the individual. Personal information to be disclosed is personal information that constitutes a collection of systematically structured information over which the company has the authority to respond when requested by the individual to disclose, correct, add or delete content, end usage, delete or end provision to a third party.

9. Retention Period

The company saves the following types of personal information for the following periods, while personal information that becomes unnecessary is deleted immediately without waiting for the retention period to elapse.

However, this excludes cases of statistical data held as stipulated by laws, regulations, etc. or which cannot be used to identify individuals.

10. Fee

If we receive a request from the individual or an agent of the individual for notification of purposes of use or disclosure and give notification or disclosure, we will charge the following fee for postage to be pay TV by the method we stipulate.

11. Procedures for the above Sections 7. and 8. above.

  1. Contact the customer center described below in Section12.
  2. Forms for each request will be mailed as necessary.
  3. Fill in the required information on each request form and return it to the customer center below.
    (Please attach certification issued by a public institution (a copy of your driver's license, health insurance card, etc.) in order to confirm that you are the individual)
  4. After confirming the details of the request, we will notify you by mailing prescribed company documents without delay regarding the implementation of appropriate measures.

*If sensitive information (permanent domicile, etc.) is contained in the certification, etc. to be submitted under (3) above, please cover it up before submitting it. If such sensitive information is not covered up when submitted, we will cover it up and not include it in the information collected.
*The above procedure will be followed in principle, but depending on the type of service we may specify a separate procedure.

Handling of personal information obtained to produce programs

Personal information handled for the purpose of journalism and writing falls outside of the obligatory stipulations of the Personal Information Protection Act as well as our personal information protection management system.
However, the Personal Information Protection Act does require businesses to take necessary measures to ensure the proper handling of such personal information as well.
We will establish and maintain the following basic policy to maintain proper handling of personal information while protecting freedom of expression when producing programs that include elements of journalism and writing.

  1. When obtaining personal information, we will in principle make clear that it is for program production, etc.
  2. We will endeavor to obtain personal information by proper methods.
  3. We will protect personal information from loss, damage, falsification, misuse, leakage, etc.
  4. We will keep personal information accurate and up to date to the extent necessary to fulfill the purpose of the program production, etc.
  5. We will in principle not use personal information obtained for program production, etc. for any other purposes.
  6. If we provide personal information obtained for program production, etc. to any third party, we will ensure that it will not be used beyond that purpose.
  7. We will establish a point of contact to handle complaints from the person in question regarding the handling of personal information in program production, etc. and respond in good faith.

What are cookies?
